Created by American artist Jasper Johns, Flag I was his first printed interpretation of the American flag.
The original 1960 lithograph was drawn with a liquid medium known as tusche, giving the image its loose, fluid appearance. Printed in rich black ink, the composition has a somber, restrained character that distinguishes it from more conventional depictions of the flag.
