A vintage printed reproduction of Henry Moore's Elephant Skull, Plate VIII, from his remarkable Elephant Skull series of 1969–1970.
The image is one of Henry Moore's extraordinary studies of an elephant skull, in which the artist moved beyond straightforward anatomical observation & began to discover landscapes, architectural structures & sculptural forms within the complex interior of the skull.
The Elephant Skull portfolio was created between 1969 & 1970 after actual elephant skull was given to Moore by the naturalist Sir Julian Huxley & his wife Juliette. Moore initially studied the skull from different angles, but became increasingly interested in its internal forms & their resemblance to landscapes & sculptural structures.
