AKSARA No.08 — Excelsior | Vintage Typography Specimen | Graphic Design Ephemera (c.1940s)

An original vintage type specimen leaflet presenting Schriftletter Excelsior, an elegant script typeface from the historic Lettergieterij Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

The specimen includes examples in Dutch and French, including phrases such as “Een krachtige en toch sierlijke letter,” “September in …,” “Exposition de Peinture au Musée d'art ancien,” & “Rubriek.” The progressively larger examples demonstrate how the graceful, highly calligraphic letterforms could be used for advertisements, headings, announcements & other forms of commercial & editorial printing.

The specimen was issued by N.V. Lettergieterij “Amsterdam” v/h N. Tetterode, the Amsterdam type foundry historically associated with the development & distribution of Excelsior. The typeface itself is documented as an Amsterdam typefoundry design dating to 1906.
